JBL Stage 3 Gen2
JBL Stage 3 Gen2: new generation of JBL car speakers for a powerful upgrade
JBL has been a household name in car audio for years. With JBL Stage 3 Gen2, JBL is introducing a new generation in the mid-range segment. This is not a radical change of direction, but a targeted technical refinement of the well-known Stage 3 speakers.
The focus is on improved control, higher efficiency, and a clearer distinction between the different models within the series. This makes the line easy to use in a wide range of installations: from direct OEM replacement to systems with higher output without an external amplifier.
Renewed design with functional improvements
The updated cone design is immediately noticeable. The cone is stiffer and has a sleeker finish. This not only serves an aesthetic purpose, but above all a technical one.
A stiffer cone structure provides:
better control at higher volumes
less distortion in the midrange
more stable display under prolonged load
In installations where speakers run directly on a head unit, this stability is essential. The magnet and cone construction is tuned for efficient driving, keeping the speaker predictable in a variety of vehicles.
The Gen2 series thus retains the recognizable character of JBL, but with a more refined tuning.
How is the JBL Stage 3 Gen2 series constructed?
The strength of JBL Stage 3 Gen2 lies in its layered structure. The series is divided not only by size, but also by impedance, output, and configuration. This creates a clear technical classification.
Stage 3 Gen2 - With grill
Within the JBL Stage 3 Gen2 series, several models are equipped with a separate speaker grille. These variants are intended for installations where the speaker is mounted visibly or where the vehicle does not use an original cover ring.
| Model | Type | Size | RMS power | Sensitivity | Impedance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stage3 48 | Coaxial | 4″ | 35 W | 91 dB | 4 ohm |
| Stage3 58 | Coaxial | 5.25″ | 45 W | 91 dB | 4 ohm |
| Stage3 68 | Coaxial | 6.5″ | 70 W | 92 dB | 4 ohm |
| Stage3 968M | 3-way | 6×9″ | 100 W | 93 dB | 4 ohm |
| Stage3 68C | Component set | 6.5″ | 50 W | 91 dB | 4 ohm |
F-Series - without grill
These speakers are intended for OEM replacement.
They are placed behind the original door panel or dash, where the vehicle’s factory grille already covers the speaker.
| Model | Type | Size | RMS | Sensitivity | Impedance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 48F | Coaxial | 4″ | 40 W | 91 dB | 4 ohm |
| 58F | Coaxial | 5.25″ | 50 W | 92 dB | 4 ohm |
| 68F | Coaxial | 6.5″ | 55 W | 92 dB | 4 ohm |
| 648F | Coaxial (high output) | 6.5″ | 60 W | 93 dB | 4 ohm |
| 68CF | Component set | 6.5″ | 60 W | 93 dB | 4 ohm |
| 968MF | 3-Way | 6×9″ | 110 W | 94 dB | 4 ohm |
Thanks to the combination of lower impedance and higher sensitivity, these models deliver:
- more dynamism
- higher SPL
- more midbass without additional amplification
- direct replacement for OEM speakers
- systems without external amplifier
- vehicles where installation must remain simple
This configuration is particularly interesting in modern vehicles where no amplifier is added, but more output is desired.
Component sets – More control and staging
The component models within JBL Stage 3 Gen2 are designed for better separation between low/mid and high frequencies.
Model | Size | RMS | Impedance |
58CF | 5.25″ | 50W | 3 ohm |
68C | 6.5″ | 50W | 4 ohm |
68CF | 6.5″ | 60W | 3 ohm |
The separate tweeter allows for higher placement in the door or A-pillar. This improves:
- stereo image
- high-level detailing
- spatiality in the sound image
These models are suitable for installations where sound image and positioning are more important than output alone.
3-Way and 6x9 – Maximum output without subwoofer
The larger models in the series are designed for maximum air displacement within a standard speaker setup.
Model | Type | RMS | Sensitivity | Impedance |
68MF | 6.5″ 3-way | 60W | 93 dB | 3 ohm |
968M | 6×9″ 3-way | 100W | 93 dB | 4 ohm |
968MF | 6×9″ 3-way | 110W | 94 dB | 3 ohm |
The larger cone surface creates:
- more midbass
- higher sound pressure
- full range without separate subwoofer
These models are often used in vehicles where no additional subwoofer is installed, but more impact is desired.
